Accreditation

In December 2003, CMHA - Durham received accreditation from the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA), a body that accredits hospitals, health clinics, and community health centres. We are proud of the fact that CMHA - Durham is one of the first community-based mental health programs to be accredited by the CCHSA across Canada. CMHA - Durham was honoured to receive a 3-year accreditation to the year 2006.

CMHA - Durham began the accreditation process in May 2002, with a desire to promote continuous quality improvement of services, to learn about what similar agencies are doing, and to demonstrate our commitment to improving services for our clients. In using the CCHSA standards to do a self-assessment of the organization, we identified our strengths and areas for improvement. Over the last year and a half many of our areas for improvement have been achieved, while others will be addressed over time. In 2004, we will develop a formal Quality Improvement program that will integrate all of our quality processes.

We would encourage other community-based health agencies to pursue accreditation with CCHSA. Accreditation was a valuable, productive, and educational process for our entire organization. It confirmed the vital and innovative work that we do, while allowing us to make necessary changes and improvements within a supportive environment. Our CCHSA surveyors and liaison staff provided excellent guidance, support, and encouragement to us. Although the accreditation process took a significant time commitment from our staff and management and will continue to require our ongoing attention, the time was and is well spent. The accreditation process was positive, rewarding, and beneficial to our organization and the way we serve people in Durham Region.
